Those were the days when the big debate
Was who to take on that big date
Days of sock hops and blind dates
And carhops on roller skates

Before we had to ask our date
If they were gay, bi or straight
Mohammed Ali went by Cassius Clay
Loved Babe Ruth and Willie Mays

Got milk and cheese straight from the dairy
Had yet to investigate the Watergate tapes
Charlie Manson and Sharon Tate were scary
When it took two to raise a family
And a man and woman to be married

Lewis and Martin were just barely startin’
When we were still back in kindergartin
Lassie was our favorite collie
Hello Dolly and Dolly Parton
And milk came in bottles, not cartons

Rowan and Martin’s Laugh In
Livin’ together was “livin’ in sin”
We left our keys in the ignition
And never thought to lock it

Made in Japan meant made of tin
No one drove a “rice rocket”
Davy Jones and Davy Crockett
“Aids” were in the school office
“Pot” was somethin’ we bought to cook in

Granny Clampett and Grandpa McCoy
Were our two favorite ol’ codgers
We hated flag burners and draft dodgers
But we loved Dale Evans and Roy Rogers

She wore a yellow polka dot bikini
We wished we were an Oscar Meyer Weanie
Shoulda seen what we paid for gasoline and deisel
We loved Lucy and Lassie and Beanie and Cecil

Dreamin’ of Jeanie with the golden hair
Dancin’ with Gene and Ginger and Fred Astaire
We loved Gunsmoke and Marshall Dillon
and chillin’ at the county fair

When everyone was more than willin’
to serve their country and do their share
When holdin’ hands was more than thrillin’
and for weeks we’d be walkin’ on air

No polio shots or penicillin
Terrorist Attacks were very rare
Wanted an end to the war and the killin’
I wanna take you back; I wanna take you there

Back when Wolfman Jack was on the air
We got no flack for sayin’ a prayer
The war in Iraq hadn’t been declared
and Sonny was still singin’ with Cher

Before Jim Baker and Tammy Faye
We all thought crime never paid
I can still recall that fateful day
Where were you the day they shot JFK?

He ain’t heavy, he’s my brother
The Nutty Professor and Flubber
And who could forget
Scarlett and Rhett and Bambi’s mother?

Before Obama and McCain
We had GI Joe and Hanoi Jane
Orson Wells was Citizen Cain
Gene Kelly was singin’ in the Rain

The only gang in town was Spankys
We had whitewall tires and a rumble seat
Cowboys wore white hats and red hankies
And we liked Alfalfa and Buckwheat

Crackerjacks always had a prize
Said words like “boss” and “neat”
Cowboys were always the good guys
The Beatles never missed a beat

Micky and Minnie, Donald and Daisy
Garfield the cat was fat and lazy
Patsy Cline was just goin’ Crazy
Those days were so amazin’

Was it just a passing faze
Or a momentary craze
My memory’s a haze
Or were they truly
Amazing Days?

Before Jim Baker and Tammy Faye
We all knew that crime never paid
I can still recall the day
The day they shot JFK

Ricky, Lucy and Mr. Mooney
Micky Mouse and Micky Rooney
Charlie, Lucy and Snoopy
If you ask me, they were all a bit loopy

Diana Ross was boss long before Microsoft and DOS
She reigned supreme with Marvin Gaye and Al Green
It’s no Joke; it’s no surprise
We got Smoke in our Eyes

It was a time when the lines were more clearly defined
and they all seemed to be much shorter
When the right thing to do was to marry the girl
or at least try to court her

Girls wore pearls and men were under orders
Before Barnes and Noble and Borders
When Big Macs were just a quarter
Before Starbucks were on every corner

Before Jim Baker and Tammy Faye
We all thought crime never paid
I can still recall that fateful day
The day they shot JFK? (3x)

Back in the day my momma’d take us
To the Saturday matinee
We loved Betty Boop and Bette Davis
Danny Thomas and Danny Kaye
Superman would fly to save us
Micky Mantel and Willy Mays
Mom and dad never had to pay us
Mohammed Ali was Cassius Clay
We prayed to the one who made us
Mighty Mouse always saved the day
Do you recall that fateful day in the motorcade?
The day they shot JFK?
He ain’t heavy, he’s my brother
Poppin wheelies and layin’ rubber
The whole family sittin’ down for supper
We didn’t need an upper
The Nutty Professor and Flubber
And who could forget Scarlett and Rhett
Thumper and Bambi’s mother

Batman and Bruce Wayne; Mickey and Minnie, Donald and Daisy
Superman, Jimmy and Lois Lane; Garfield the cat was fat and lazy
Gary Cooper and John Wayne; Patsy Cline was goin’ Crazy
Band Stand and Soul Train: my memory’s a wee bit hazy
Orson Wells in Citizen Cain; the Dukes of Hazzard and Daisy
Gene Kelly Singin’ in the Rain; those days were so amazing

The only gang in town was Spankys
Cowboys were always the “good guys”
They wore white hats and red hankys
And Crackerjacks always had a prize

We loved Ricky, Lucy and Mr. Mooney
Ralph and Alice were the Honeymooners
Micky Mouse and Mickey Rooney
The King and Bing were our favorite crooners
Rosemary’s Baby and Rosemary Clooney
If you ask me, they were all a bit looney

We ain’t quitters and we ain’t losers
We’re heavy hitters and power users
Some of us are substance abusers
We loved Tex Ritter and “Hoosiers”
And some of us are “late bloomers”
As you can tell I’m tryin’ to sell this to the “Boomers”

We loved Lucy, Snoopy and Charlie Brown
Pluto, Goofy and Huckleberry Hound
We were gettin’ down to the Motown sound
‘Til the circus came to town
Led by Bozo the Clown

Diana Ross was boss before Microsoft and DOS
She reigned supreme with Marvin Gaye and Al Green
It’s no Joke; it’s no surprise; we got Smoke in our Eyes
Crackerjacks always had a prize and, let me put you wise
Earrings were for girls, not guys

Livin’ together was “livin’ in sin”
“Intel” was news from the front lines
“Pot” was somethin’ we bought to cook in
No iphone, no cell, we had a party line
We left our keys in the ignition
And never thought to lock it
Made in Japan meant “made of tin”
“Aids” were in the school office
Rin Tin Tin and Ho Chi Min
No one drove a “rice rocket”
Jimmy Durante and Errol Flynn
Davy Jones and Davy Crockett
Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn
Guess those Happy Days, my friend,
Are Gone with the Wind

Got “hardware” from the hardware store
A “chip” was a little piece of wood
“Software” was what the ladies wore
And cowboys were always good

They wore white hats and red bandanas
We watched “Parent Trap” and “Polyanna”
We liked Ike and Dick Van Dyke
and rode our Schwinn bike to the corner store
with butterfly handlebars and a banana seat
And the only gang in town was Spankys
And we loved Alfalfa and Buckwheat
We had a runnerboard and a rumble seat
And everything was “boss” and “neat”

Whatever happened to Captain Kangeroo
Mr. Green Jeans and Mr. Magoo
Beehive hairdos and Dippity Doo
Yogi Bear and Boo Boo
Little Boy Blue and the man in the moon
A Boy Named Sue and One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Next
Johnny Carson and Johnny Quest
We could be Queen for a Day and Father Knew Best
